Abortion Methods and scheduling at Feminin Health Clinic Vienna

After a thorough consultation at the Feminin Health Clinic, we will explain the different methods of abortion and provide complete medical and emotional support throughout the process. The choice of method depends on the patient’s preference and the stage of pregnancy.

  • From the 64th day (10th week of pregnancy), a surgical abortion is usually the only option available.

We recommend making a decision early to keep all options open. A follow-up check is typically scheduled about two weeks after the procedure. If needed, a doctor is available by phone at any time.

We offer short-notice appointments for the procedure to minimize waiting times. In most cases, you can get an appointment within 1–3 days. To schedule, simply give us a call.

Medical Abortion with Mifepristone (Mifegyne)®

Process

Up to the 9th Week of Pregnancy.
The medical abortion method involves the use of Mifepristone, a medication that blocks the hormone progesterone — which is essential for maintaining pregnancy. By taking Mifepristone, the body initiates a process similar to an early natural miscarriage, gently ending the pregnancy in its early stage.

Mifegyne®/Mifepristone is highly effective throughout pregnancy. But another hormone, a prostaglandin, must be taken two days after Mifepristone to induce contractions of the uterus and assure expulsion of the gestational sac.

What to Keep in Mind After the Procedure

  • Take the day off and rest at home when taking the second tablet.

  • Light bleeding may occur for up to 2–3 weeks after the abortion.

  • Your next menstrual period should begin about 4 weeks after the procedure.

  • You can become pregnant again immediately — appropriate contraception is important.

  • Use sanitary pads, not tampons, during the first week.

  • Avoid sexual intercourse, full baths, and swimming during the first week.

  • Showering and light exercise are allowed.

  • If you experience heavy bleeding, fever, or severe pain, please contact us immediately. In case of emergency, do not hesitate to call emergency services.

Surgical Abortion

What to Consider Before and After the Procedure

Before the procedure, it is important that you do not eat or drink for at least 6 hours, as anesthesia can only be administered on an empty stomach. Please note that you will not be able to drive after receiving short-term anesthesia. We recommend having someone accompany you to take you home or using public transportation.

After the procedure, light to moderate bleeding may occur and can last for 1–2 weeks. During this time, please avoid swimming, full baths, sexual intercourse, and the use of tampons.

A medically supervised abortion has no impact on future fertility or pregnancies. Our experienced doctors are available for a personal consultation and will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Procedure

From the 64th day of pregnancy (beginning of the 10th week), a surgical abortion is usually the only available method.

A surgical (instrumental) abortion involves gently removing the pregnancy tissue from the uterus using suction. No incisions or stitches are required. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia or light sedation. A thin tube is inserted into the uterus to remove the embryo and tissue.

Mild cramping or discomfort may occur after the procedure but typically subsides within one to two days with the help of pain medication. Precise and careful execution is essential to minimize the risk of complications.

Including the initial consultation and postoperative recovery time, please plan for approximately 1 to 2 hours for your entire appointment.

Emergency contraception

In Austria, two emergency contraception medications are available without a prescription: Vikela® (levonorgestrel) and EllaOne® (ulipristal acetate).

Both must be taken within 72 or 120 hours after unprotected intercourse.
They are effective, but not reliable if ovulation has already occurred.

Even higher effectiveness is offered by the copper or gold IUD, as well as the abortion pill Cyprostol, which has a success rate of 99% when used within 120 hours (5 days).

An added benefit of the copper or gold IUD is that it provides long-term contraception after insertion, offering continued and reliable protection over an extended period.

Abortion Law and Legal Regulations in Austria

Is abortion legal in Austria?

In Austria, abortion is legal within the first three months of pregnancy under Section 97, Paragraph 1 of the Austrian Criminal Code (StGB), based on the time-limit regulation (Fristenregelung), which has been in effect since 1975.
A consultation with a qualified medical doctor is required, but no justification for the decision is necessary.

For women between the ages of 14 and 18, parental consent is not required — unless there is a mental disability or the abortion is sought before the age of 14, in which case parental approval is mandatory.

Abortion After the 12th Week of Pregnancy

In certain cases, abortion is also permitted after the third month of pregnancy, for example:

  • if there is a risk to the physical or mental health of the pregnant person

  • if there is a danger to the life of the pregnant person

  • if the unborn child is expected to have a severe physical or mental disability

  • if the pregnant person has not yet reached the age of 14 at the time of pregnancy
