Frequently asked questions about termination of pregnancy and abortion
Who can I contact if I’m affected? What legal regulations apply in Austria? In our FAQs on the topic of abortion, you’ll find clear answers to the most frequently asked questions – medically sound and tailored to your individual situation. We want to offer you guidance and support you with trustworthy information.
What is an abortion?
An abortion is the intentional termination of an existing pregnancy, either through medication or a surgical procedure. In Austria, abortion is permitted under certain conditions, primarily within the framework of the so-called “time-limit solution” (Fristenlösung). This allows for an abortion without medical indication up to the 12th week of pregnancy.
What options are available for abortion in Vienna or in Austria in general?
In Austria – including Vienna – abortion is legal under the conditions defined by law. At the feminin Medical and Health Center, we perform abortions and support you with medical information and, if desired, psychological counseling. The decision lies with the pregnant person – we are here to support you with respect and professionalism.
What methods of abortion are available?
- Medical abortion: Possible up to the 9th week of pregnancy.
- Surgical abortion: Recommended from the 10th week of pregnancy onward.
The exact procedure depends on the stage of pregnancy and the chosen method.
Abortion – until when is it possible?
Within the framework of the time-limit solution (Fristenlösung), abortion in Austria is not punishable if performed within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
In special cases – such as serious health risks to the pregnant person or severe fetal abnormalities – a late-term abortion, meaning an abortion after the 12th week or even after the 16th week of pregnancy, is legally permitted.
What to do in the case of an unplanned or unwanted pregnancy?
An unplanned or unwanted pregnancy can bring many questions and uncertainties. In this challenging situation, it’s important to know: you are not alone. At our center, you have the opportunity to speak confidentially with our experienced psychologist. She will support you with empathy as you navigate your options and make the decision that is right for you.
How does an abortion actually work?
The abortion process begins with a medical consultation and an ultrasound examination. Depending on the chosen method, either a medication is administered or a minor outpatient surgical procedure is performed.
Is an abortion dangerous?
A complication-free abortion is considered safe and generally has no impact on fertility. Our medical team will provide you with detailed information about the procedure, possible risks, and will answer your personal questions with care and empathy.
Who covers the cost of an abortion?
In Austria, the cost of an abortion must generally be covered by the person undergoing the procedure. However, there are organizations that can provide information about possible financial assistance and offer supportive counseling.
What happens after the abortion?
Follow-up check-ups, restoration of the menstrual cycle, and emotional recovery are important aspects of aftercare. If you experience uncertainties or ongoing emotional distress, psychological support is recommended.
Can I become pregnant again after an abortion?
A complication-free abortion does not affect fertility.
